When Terex sold its Demag mobile cranes business to Tadano in 2019, crane owners reacted like the sky was falling. I watched fleet managers delay purchases, switch brands, and dump Demag stock, convinced the German engineering legacy would be diluted. Five years on, the opposite happened. The 2019 Tadano acquisition has been the single biggest improvement to Demag support infrastructure in decades. The range starts at the 40-tonne class with the AC 40/4 and goes up to heavy-lift giants like the AC 500 and AC 700, rated for principal lifts of 500 and 700 tonnes.

What makes these cranes effective also makes them fragile to downtime. They run multiple engines, load moment computers, and complex hydraulic circuits.   • Verify regional support before you sign. The dealer network is strong in Europe, North America, Japan, and much of Southeast Asia. It's thinner in South America and Africa. Ask your dealer for a written parts-availability commitment specific to your location.
  • Let go of the 2019 narrative. The story "Terex sells Demag mobile cranes to Tadano in 2019" sounded like bad news at the time. The operational evidence since then points the other way. The ownership change strengthened the support system, not weakened it.

Where the good news stops

I'm not going to oversell this. The acquisition didn't solve every problem. New Demag model development slowed for the first couple of years while Tadano integrated the two businesses. Some older Terex-era models still carry genuine parts lead times of four to six weeks. And if you're in a region where Tadano's dealer coverage is thin, the improvements I've described may not reach you. Check your specific situation; don't assume.

But the core conclusion holds: the transition from Terex to Tadano was a net positive for Demag owners and buyers. The product line is intact, the brand is arguably stronger, and the parts situation is dramatically better.
