Volvo, Air Compressors, Generators, and Fuel Pumps: Three Buying Scenarios

Every week somebody asks me what they should buy. Usually it's an excavator, an air compressor, or a generator. My answer is always the same: 'It depends.' That sounds like a dodge, but it's not. I'm an office administrator for a 50-person excavation company. I manage parts and equipment ordering—roughly $1.6 million annually across 30 vendors. I report to operations and finance, and I've been doing this since 2020. I've made enough mistakes to know that the cheapest option can be the most expensive one, and the expensive option can be cheap if it keeps a crew working.

  • Situation C: multiple crews, multiple jobsites, and a maintenance shop that has to run every day.

Situation A: One Machine and Not Much Room for Error

The common advice is to buy a used excavator to save cash. I understand the logic. I've also watched it backfire enough times that I now give the opposite advice: rent or lease first, even if it feels like throwing money away. A used compact excavator can look like a bargain until the undercarriage needs work. We replaced sprockets and idlers on a 2018 machine in 2024, and the bill was around $15,000. That's more than a year of lease payments on a new ECR25.

If you're looking for a Volvo RC excavator, the ECR25 is the one I'd rent first. It fits through a backyard gate, it has enough power for footings and utility lines, and the resale market is strong. But rent it for a month before you commit. You'll learn quickly whether it earns its keep on your jobs.

For backup power, get a Predator generator. I'd choose the inverter type, not the cheapest conventional frame. Inverter generators cost more, but they produce cleaner power, which matters when you're charging batteries on machines with electronic controls. Situation C: Multiple Crews and a Shop That Can't Stop

At this scale, you're not buying a machine. You're buying reliability and data. Volvo's telematics and dealer portal aren't luxuries. We cut parts-ordering time by about six hours a month after I got the dealer portal configured. The telematics caught a hydraulic temperature trend before it became a $9,000 pump failure.

The common advice is to upgrade to a rotary screw compressor. That's true only when air demand is constant. If your shop runs a couple of techs and not a production line, a good piston compressor with a refrigerated dryer is still the smarter buy. The gain I've seen came from putting the compressor in its own room and running a proper main line with drains, not from switching compressor style.

A Predator generator can be a solid backup here too. We used one during a three-day outage in 2024 to run shop lights, a parts washer, and a battery charger. It was loud, but it worked. I want to say it was the 9500 model, but don't quote me on that. The spec sheet matters more than the model name.

Fuel pump testing at this level means using a diagnostic scanner, not just a multimeter. On Volvo's common-rail diesels, you can watch rail pressure while the operator revs the machine. If rail pressure sags under load, the low-pressure fuel pump is a prime suspect. But check voltage drop and the fuel filter first. Replacing a $400 pump when a $20 filter is plugged is the classic mistake.

How to Test a Fuel Pump (Without Guessing)

Because I get asked this so often, here's the order I use:

  1. Check fuel pressure with a gauge. On a gasoline EFI system, pressure should build quickly and hold for several minutes after shutdown. On a diesel common-rail engine, you're checking the low-pressure lift pump side first, not rail pressure.
  2. Measure voltage at the pump connector while it's running. A pump can spin but run weak if it's only getting 9 volts. The factory service manual lists the minimum voltage.
  3. Check amperage draw. Most electric pumps draw somewhere between 3 and 8 amps. If it's drawing 12 amps, the motor is struggling. If it draws almost nothing, the pump isn't running.
  4. Check the strainer and filter before you replace the pump. I know it's the boring check. But I'd rather spend $40 on a filter and 20 minutes than $400 on a pump and an hour of labor.

Looking back at the first fuel pump we replaced under my watch, I should have checked the filter first. We replaced the pump, the pressure stayed low, and the filter was the problem. Now the test order is non-negotiable.

Which Situation Are You In?

If you're not sure, use these three questions:

  • How many hours per week does your main machine run? Under 20, rent. 20 to 40, buy used or lease with warranty. Over 40, buy new or certified and budget for backup.
  • What happens when the air compressor goes down? If the whole crew stops, buy for uptime. If it's an inconvenience, buy for price.
  • Do you have someone who can diagnose a fuel pump problem? If not, the warranty matters more than the purchase price.

The mistake I see most often is not picking the wrong tool. It's picking a tool based on someone else's circumstances. A $4,000 air compressor is a great buy for one shop and a terrible buy for another. That's not a contradiction. It's just the math changing.
